DescriptionThe important role of women in daily and ritual life is evidenced by the numerous examples of effigy jars such as this one that depict female figures with ritual decorations. The black-slipped jar is incised with a large variety of body markings and other decorations. Some groups also practiced cranial modification as a ritual tradition or status indicator, and this ancient form of body enhancement can be seen in the shape of the top of this effigy jar.
