DescriptionWest Mexican ceramics are anecdotal in nature, recording scenes from everyday life. Dogs are one of the most frequently represented animals. They are associated with an ancient belief that they served as guides for the deceased to the Underworld. A second myth describes the dog as leading a group of people to safety on a high mountain to avoid drowning during a flood. The survivors, according to the Cora myth, are ancestors of mankind. The design on the man's shirt, front and back, appears to represent two mountain peaks which were highlighted by a now faded white slip.
