    DescriptionMonkeys are ubiquitous in the art of ancient Mesoamerica, and many of the cultures of the region recognized the monkey’s intelligence and capability for learning. Monkeys appear in creation myths and were commonly linked with art, artists, writing, and sexuality. This unusual figurine is made of marble, a material found throughout the mountain ranges of Mesoamerica. Sitting quietly, this monkey has a thoughtful and patient expression. The open design of this piece shows connections to stone carving traditions further south.
