DescriptionLarge figures such as this seated male have been found in a limited area near the Jalisco-Colima state border. They are distinguished by specific facial characteristics and garments. It has been suggested that these figures were a specialized local style which was produced for only a short time. Figures seated on a four-legged bench occur in only three areas in West Mexico-the Coahuyana Valley, the Pihuamo area of southern Jalisco, and Nayarit. The four-legged stool is generally associated with the use of hallucinogens by shamans, and religious rituals. The figure wears chest armor, jewelry and a close-fitting helmet. His face is distinguished by wide, staring eyes surrounded by a painted diamond pattern.
