DescriptionThe concept of movement in sculpture was first introduced by the Olmec and was continued in the later Protoclassic and Early Classic Periods of Veracruz sculpture. Solid, hand-modelled figures were made in a manner much like the gingerbread figures of West Mexico in a process called pastillaje. The crude bodies were dressed and adorned by pressing smaller pieces of clay to a dampened surface. Additional details were added by incising, pinching and the application of bitumen.
