    DescriptionPrincess Havana, a life-sized rod puppet, was commissioned from the artist in 1999 by the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami as part of a marionette performance. The performance, "Once Upon an Island," was written by Hervin Romney, with an introduction by the artist's mother, Margarita Cano. The production was a highly political satire about the cities of Miami and Havana. In the artist's imagination, the two cities became lovers: Prince Miami and Princess Havana. For Cano, who was born in Cuba but raised in Miami from the age of two, the rod puppet Princess Havana "symbolized everything that is Cuban in me."
