DescriptionThis figure is the product of the De-hua kilns in Fujien Province which specialized in the production of Taoist and Buddhist figures. The white coloration of the porcelain lent itself to the white robes. Unlike most Chinese pottery production objects, the figures produced at the De-hua kilns are often signed by the artist. In this case, the figure was created by the famous 17th century potter-family artist Ho Chao-zung. When first imported into Europe in the late 17th century, the ware from De-hua was called "blanc de chine" (white china) by the French.
