DescriptionAround 1960 Jim Dine staged the Happening, "Car Crash." The year before, Dine and his family had actually been in a car crash in which a friend had died, and although Dine denied that the performance and the crash were related, many considered the Happening a metaphorical re-enactment. Dine completed many drawings incorporating the word "crash" for the Happening environment. The Crash suite, also from 1960 and executed densely with heavy expressionistic strokes, seems closely related to that project, although Dine denies the relationship.
