DescriptionA sculptor, architect, military engineer, and visionary theorist, Francesco di Giorgio Martini was also a prolific painter. This small, devotional painting is typical of his style, employing traditional religious imagery, a gold background, punched decoration, and flat haloes. One of many such works produced by the painter and his workshop in the 1460s and 1470s, it may have been the product of a collaboration, designed by Francesco but executed by his fellow Sienese artist, Neroccio de’ Landi (1447-1500), with whom he worked from ca. 1469 to 1475. Such collaborations were common in late medieval and Renaissance Italy, especially at times when an artist’s work was in high demand or he had multiple artistic projects to complete. On View
