DescriptionThe base of this elaborate urn has been modeled with the face of G-3, or Kinich Ahau, the sun-eyed lord. Kinich Ahau personified the Sun on its journey through the Underworld and in this sense, is often conflated with the Jaguar God of the Underworld. Large urns such as this one were made as burial offerings and were interred in tombs. Uneven weathering of these two pieces may account for the difference in color, or they may have originally come from two separate vessels.
