DescriptionOne of a pair of paintings in the Lowe’s collection, Coccorante’s seaside view framed by crumbling, classical arches and columns is a typical example of landscapes that were known as vedute ideate, imaginary views of believable sites, featuring fantastic ruins, rocky coastlines, and vast expanses of water. In this particular case, Coccorante composed two contrasting scenes of the calm and stormy seas which respectively convey a sense of Nature’s grandeur as well as its destructive power. The small figures who carry on their daily lives in the foreground, probably painted by other artists, appear insubstantial against the backdrop of these powerful settings.
