DescriptionThis double-spout jar is an example of a distinctive ceramic style known as Murillo appliqué, which is characterized by red, glossy pottery with modeled decorative features. Relatively uncommon, this style was likely influenced by ceramic traditions of South America. Four highly detailed crocodiles and frogs decorate this delicate vessel. These tropical animals were common decorative motifs in the art of Costa Rica and crocodiles in particular appeared often to shamans in visions.- Art of the Ancient Americas
