DescriptionDuring the years of the conquest, large numbers of gold and silver objects were melted down for bullion. What remains of the Ancient American metalwork today are objects which were produced for inclusion in tombs. In the New World, gold was first worked in Peru by the Chavin culture about 1000 BCE Their technology of metal working spread north to Colombia, through Panama to Costa Rica and Mexico. Objects such as this crown with bird heads and spangles were reserved for graves of the elite. On View
