DescriptionThe mouth in Smoker, from the series An American Portrait 1776-1976: Look Out Beyond and See, sexually provocative and iconically isolated, typifies the artist's fetishistic exploration of the female body, a subject Wesselmann has not tired of to this day. The print was made for an artists' portfolio commemorating the U.S. Bicentennial in 1976. Perhaps Wesselmann is wryly commenting on America's obsessive smoking habit, developed - to the detriment of the entire population - over the last two hundred years.
