DescriptionWarriors were a common subject of Gulf Coast art. This figure wears an elaborate headdress and an intricate costume composed of a tunic, belted vest, bell necklace, and arm and ankle bands. His arms are raised and he seems ready to leap into action. The triangular shape of his head and facial features are reminiscent of traditional ceramic figures in the Remojadas style. The most striking feature is perhaps the figure’s open mouth, which seems about to speak a message of great importance. Images like this warrior have been interpreted as representations of high-status individuals and were included in residences, probably as part of ancestor worship rituals.
