DescriptionThe Toby jug is an eighteenth century English type that inspired imitations in many other ceramic traditions around the world. It seems to have had a special appeal to Africans, possibly because theu had their own types of drinking or libation vessels that were decorated with human heads. Judging from the detailing, especially the way the eyes are made, this piece probably dates from around the turn of the century.- Art of Africa
