DescriptionThe design on this dish shows two female attendants in a garden setting painted in "feu de rouge" or overglaze iron red decoration. The homes of the very wealthy "mandarins" often included gardens, such as the one shown in the background. The large decorative rocks in the immediate foreground and again on the right side of the female attendant holding a flower were typically found in Chinese gardens. The decoration around the center is composed of panels in the form of tulip bulbs decorated within with potted flowers and a bird on a branch. These panels are in turn broken with floral sprays. The use of iron red as the sole pigment on ceramics became popular in the early 18th century. This plate also has highlights of gold paint in the decoration. On View
