DescriptionConsidered America's finest documentary photographer of the 20th century, Walker Evans' style has often been described as straight, direct, unhurried, unobtrusive, calm, timeless, silent, and pure. "I am for man's work and the civilization he's built," he once said, and although these images lack the presence of human figures, they speak eloquently of human achievement. Begun in 1867 and completed in 1883, the bridge linking Manhattan and Brooklyn across the East River is considered the most picturesque bridge in the city. Until 1903, it was also the longest suspension bridge in the world, and the only large one made of steel. Some called it "the world's eighth wonder." Featuring a pedestrian promenade, Gothic and Italian Renaissance arches, and sweeping cables, the Brooklyn Bridge is said to have inspired more painters, poets, and photographers than any other bridge in America.
