DescriptionOne of the preeminent masculine rituals for elite Maya men of the Classic period was the ballgame. Royal men are shown wearing stone yokes on painted Maya ceramics but scholars disagree on whether the heavy ornaments were actually worn during play or were for display before and after the game. This example is carved in an early style and shows a crouching jaguar with open maw.
