DescriptionThese “talking drums” are the center of ceremonial life in Malekula and Amrym, the two largest islands in the Republic of Vanuatu and responsible for most of the traditional art. The drums, of all sizes, most over life-size, are set up in the center of the village ceremonial ground in a group dominated by a large “mother” drum. They are used in all ceremonies from those that mark a man’s advancement in the graded societies to memorial rites honoring the ancestors. During the memorial rites, commemorative figures of the deceased may be set up near the drums.
