DescriptionWithout traditional artist’s materials, and with raw materials in short supply, industrious Haitian sculptors have improvised by reusing oil drums. A sheet of metal is flattened with a hammer, using a brick or stone as an anvil. The design is then drawn on with chalk, and cut out with a mallet and chisel in a laborious process. Finally, the sharp edges are filed down, and sometimes a coat of sealant is applied to the finished work.
