DescriptionJapanese wood sculpture first evolved in the eighth century during the Heian Period and reached its zenith in the Kamakura Period (1185-1332), but due to the fragile and perishable nature of wood, few early works have survived. This seventeenth-century example is executed in the style of the Kamakura as it was inherited from the earlier Heian. For stylistic reasons it has been tentatively identified as a Buddhist sect founder or disciple.
