DescriptionDespite her formal attire, Princess von Anhalt is depicted in a private moment, needlepointing within the intimacy of her room. The act of needlepoint, commonly associated with domestic virtue, is a theme repeated in many 17th century Dutch portraits, including those of Vermeer. The Princess's clothing and hair style dates the portrait to the mid-1770s.
