DescriptionResin incense gathered from the tropical forest was one of the most precious offerings in Maya religion. During the Postclassic period, ladles such as this one were used to carry burning incense in processions and other rituals. The handles of certain important tools, such as weaving picks, paint brushes, and incense ladles, were decorated with human hands in order to emphasize the responsibility of their owners to use them correctly. The end of this object is half human hand and half jaguar paw.
