DescriptionThis painting is contemporary with Giovanni Bellini's Madonna of the Meadow of ca. 1500-1505 (London, National Gallery; 599), and thereby represents one of the earliest examples in Venetian art of a full-length Madonna seated in a landscape. Diana employed the same composition with slight variations in his Madonna and Child with St. Luke and St. Barbara and a Donor (Collection of the Duke of Portland). The small size of the painting and the inclusion of St. Jerome makes it likely that it served as a private devotional image for someone whose name saint was Jerome. From the time of its publication by Bernard Berenson, the painting has been considered an autograph work by Diana and was dated to ca. 1504 by Fritz Heinemann.
